St. John the Evangelist

St John is depicted on the Island of Patmos where he is understood to have ended his days. He proffers a scroll to the viewer bearing the first word of his Gospel, 'The Word', written in Greek which can just be seen on the inside of the scroll. The eagle in the mid-ground is a traditional symbol of St John.
